Pastoral Care Ministries

The Pastoral Care/Men’s Ministry operates under the leadership and authority of
St. Clair Mitchell, Sr. Pastor.  In 2006, the number of ministries in the Pastoral Care/Men’s Ministries grew from 14 to 18.  We are comprised of highly motivated and loyal volunteers who are committed to executing the overall mission and vision of Evangel.  We also operate under the standard of excellence whereby our words, followed by action, equal integrity.  Our group is diverse, and our faith is anchored in Biblical truth.  We believe that clear communication with sensitivity to others is the key to the success of our ministry.

Empowering Disciples for Kingdom Reign Class.

This class is designed to provide a solid Christian foundation that will enable new believers to begin the exciting journey and process of becoming a “Disciple.”  Webster’s dictionary defines “disciple” as, “an earthly follower of Jesus.”  Mature believers are welcome to take this course as a refresher.  The objective of the class is to produce behaviors and lifestyles that are consistent with the Word of God.  Staff consists of Charles Ector, Eunice Goodwyn, William Turner, Vince Moten, and Vanessa McClam who are all passionate and committed to producing disciples.  This class meets continuously throughout the year to meet the needs of our growing congregation.

Prison Ministry

According to Vince Moten, the leader of the Prison Ministry, “2006 was the most productive year thus far.  Several hundred men and women experienced physical and spiritual healing in the name of the Lord.  Many others rededicated their lives to a more fruitful lifestyle.  Many invitations were received from prison officials to share the gospel with inmates in Maryland and Washington DC.”

Altar Counselors

This ministry is led by Charles McCollum, and it is comprised of 15 committed and mature Christians who are sold out to God.  They are constantly on their faces before God in prayer and fasting.  This vital ministry meets and prays with new as well as rededicated Christians.  In addition, the Altar Counselors pray with those who demonstrate or request a need for prayer.  In 2006, over 100 people entered into salvation and rededication, and many received prayer victories.

Water Baptism

This vital ministry is scheduled on the third Sunday of each month.  Classes are conducted prior to each Baptism.  In 2006, we witnessed 59 people who decided to follow Jesus Christ’s command to be baptized.  The leaders of this ministry are Deacon Jim and Salome Broderick.

 Hostess Ministry

The Hostess Ministry, led by Salome Broderick, grew from 28 to 38 faithful and loyal volunteers in 2006.  These women are the first to meet and greet all attendees of Evangel during Sunday and Wednesday Services.  They provide a warm smile and caring atmosphere to members as well as visitors.

 Communion

Deacon Dave Reyes leads this ministry that is called by God to remember the events of the Last Supper.  As such, our purpose is to administer the sacraments of Communion in the most orderly and sanctimonious way.  Over 16 faithful men of God, consisting of Deacons, assist the Senior Pastor with this ministry.

 Ushers

As recorded in 1 Chronicles 9:26-27, “But the four principal gatekeepers, who were Levites, were entrusted with the responsibility for the rooms and treasuries in the house of God.  They would spend the night stationed around the house of  God, because they had to guard it; and they had charge of the key for opening it each morning.”  Deacon Brian McLendon provides leadership to the Ushers.  These loyal men of God keep God’s house in order under the direction of our Senior Pastor.

 Emergency Response Team

Marvee McLendon, a Licensed Nurse, and Deacon Gary Tobias, Captain of Arlington Fire Department, lead this unique ministry in providing initial medical intervention to individuals experiencing a medical crisis.  This team draws on the assistance and skills of a number of other ministries (Ushers, Hostess, and Security).  In 2006 (the first year), this team successfully assisted 15 people who required medical attention.

 Military Partnership

This ministry, established in late 2006,  is designed to assist military families of service men and women when the military member is deployed.  Under the leadership of Clarence Weaver, this ministry expanded its role in visiting and encouraging military families (whether active duty or retired) at Walter Reed and Malcolm Grow Hospital (Andrews Air Force Base).

 Nursing Home

The unsung heroes of faith are these men and women who are committed and faithful in serving in this ministry.  On Saturdays, between 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m., six to eight individuals from this ministry come together and minister to those confined to a local nursing home.  They provide praise and worship, prayer, and laughter to those who otherwise may not hear the Word of God.  Vince Bonner has faithfully led this group for over 4 years.

 Hospital Visitation

Reverend Ralph Dorsey, leader of this wonderful ministry, provides bedside prayers and spiritual support for sick individuals who are hospitalized or at home.  Individuals in this ministry have visited over 2000 people in the metropolitan area.  Additionally, the pastoral staff assists in visiting members of Evangel who are unable to travel due to illness.  They also provide them with Service tapes, a daily devotional book, church bulletins, and Bible study materials from our Wednesday Evening Services.

 Parking and Security

Deacon Chip Hutton is the leader of Evangel’s Security Team.  This ministry provides safety for our members and visitors while attending Evangel.  This team continuously monitors the parking lot and the inside of our church during Services and special events.  Over 30 devoted men volunteer for this ministry.

 Evangelism and Visitation

This ministry truly demonstrates the meaning of the word “evangelism.”  Over 100 homes of first-time visitors to Evangel were visited in 2006.  This included 48 follow-up calls, 20 follow-up letters, and over 15 hours of door-to-door visits.  The leaders of this ministry are Charles and Leotta Ceres.

 New Minority Male Health Project

In conjunction with Bowie State University, this ministry is comprised of Pastor John Moore, Brother Doug Clark, Brother Ed Little, and Dr. Byron White.  This advisory board assists graduate students in the Psychology Department with unique research and data affecting the health of minority men.  They focus on eight health disparities which include HIV/Aids, Hypertension, Hepatitis, High Cholesterol, Cardiovascular Disease, Stroke, Liver Cancer, and Prostate Cancer.

 Intercessory Prayer

This Ministry is both highly visible and valuable in the eyes of our Senior Pastor and leadership.  The intercessors are viewed as vital to the success of the church.  They are always seeking the will of God. The intercessors are responsible for “standing in the gap” for God’s people.

 Pastoral Aide

This ministry includes Deacons Chip Hutton, Brian McLendon, Jerry Osborne, and Jim Broderick.  These men are dedicated to meeting Senior Pastor St. Clair Mitchell’s needs in various areas of his pastoral duties.
